How did an elementary Spanish program become a part of the Waunakee Community School District?
A committee of world language teachers, classroom teachers, principals, and administrators met for two years (2004-2006) to develop a proposal explaining the benefits of starting an elementary world language program. When the School Board approved the proposal, a group of teachers designed a framework that is based on the Nystrom social studies curriculum. Our program integrates Spanish language instruction with social studies concepts. Many linguistic and cultural components are built into the curriculum to enrich the previous social studies program. The students in Waunakee are getting a world-class education!
Our World Language Curriculum
Students in grades 1-3 receive 30 minutes of world language instruction through a social studies content based program, six times per ten day rotation in our schedule. Students in grade 4 receive 30 minutes of world language instruction through a social studies contentent related program, four times per 10 day rotation. Social studies and Spanish standards are integrated into every class period. Each year students will also learn about a different Spanish-speaking area of the world.
