Woodworking classes offered at Kewaskum High School

1) Fundamentals of Woodworking (9-12) 1 Credit- This course is an introduction to the woodworking process. Students will become familiar with safety practices, identification of common wood species and construction of common wood joints. The main focus of this class is on the safe use of hand; portable and stationary power tools to create a project. This class is broken up into 40% classroom work and 60% lab work. 2) Furniture Design And Production (9-12) 1 Credit-  Each student is expected to complete two projects of his/her own design, pre-approved by the instructor. The chosen project should force the completion of a specific cabinetmaking or furniture making process. The projects chosen by the student need not be large or expensive. There are many challenging projects that are resonably priced. Topic areas covered in this classinclude the following: project design and planning, face frame construction techniques, drawer construction, door construction, advanced wood joints such as: pocket, dovetail, biscuit, dowel, half-lap and mortise-and-tenon. Students will be expected to purchase their own material and secure a wayof getting material to school. This class is broken up into 30% classroom work and 70% lab work. 3) Industrial Wood Production (10-12) 1 Credit- This course will focus on the production end of the woodworking process. Students entering this class will be taught how to use creative problem solving techniques to be successful in a cooperative learning environment. Each student will be placed into a small team and each team will start their own production company. The main goal of the company is to successfully design, engineer, build, market, and sell their product for a profit. Each team will be competing directly with the other teams in the class. Topic areas covered in this class include: Brainstorming techniques, prototyping, design and engineering ideas, manufacturing, jig/fixture construction and marketing and production. This class is broken up into 35% classroom work/activities and 65% lab work. Safety glasses are required for this class. Click here for course syllabus.

4) Construction Skills (10-12) 1 Credit- This course will give students a background in the construction industry. The main emphasis is given to the layout of framing materials. Main topics will include: Framing a wall and floor, truss layout, foundation layout and material estimation. In addition to classroom work there will be lab work that will include building a 1' to 1" scale model house using actual blueprints and the possibility of building a full size shed. Safety glasses are required for this class.
