ECASD Adjusts Secondary Schedules
to Meet DPI Instructional Minute Guidelines
The Eau Claire Area School District was notified in November that the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) believed that the District was short on total minutes of instructional time. A member of the ECASD administrative staff has been in contact with individuals at DPI about this matter since we were first notified. The ECASD has shared detailed schedules for each of our schools per DPI’s request.
The ECASD had earlier been notified – around June 2009 – that all of our schools met DPI instructional minute guidelines.
The only schools impacted are our five secondary schools. While the number of hours differs somewhat from school-to-school, the ECASD has taken a systemic solutions approach. The reason for the difference in the number of hours is the variability of individual school schedules.
For Eau Claire Memorial and North High Schools, Monday morning collaboration time for teachers will be converted into student instructional time beginning on March 1, 2010 for the remainder of the school year. This would be implemented at both high schools because of consistency between the two schools and the fact that staff is shared by the two high schools.
For our three middle schools, we will begin the instructional day at 7:35 a.m. This will also begin on March 1, 2010. This is a change of ten minutes and will not necessitate any significant alterations to bus schedules. All three middle schools will end at 2:45 p.m.
Schedules have been adjusted in the past by the ECASD and other school districts to meet the DPI guidelines for instructional minutes.
